In the Footsteps of the Old City Wall

Nation and Burgher City on the Pest Small Boulevard

The medieval wall of Pest still hides in courtyards and between houses. Trace its line along the Small Boulevard and discover how a merchant town became the heart of a nation.

A surviving section of the medieval Pest city wall

Few visitors notice it, but medieval Pest was a walled town — and its wall still runs through the city, in backyards, staircases and the foundations of apartment buildings along the Small Boulevard.

Following its line, we see how a German-speaking merchant town became the political and intellectual centre of modern Hungary, from the steps of the National Museum in 1848 to the lecture halls of the university.
