The Danube embankments

The Danube as a Historical Border and Link

From the Romans to the Present Day

The river has divided and connected this place for two thousand years. Follow the Danube from the Roman frontier to the bridges and embankments that made Budapest one city.

The Chain Bridge and the Parliament from Castle Hill

For the Romans the Danube was the edge of the empire: Aquincum stood on one bank, a fortified outpost faced it on the other. For centuries afterwards Buda and Pest were two towns looking at each other across the water.

This walk follows the river as border and bridge — how it shaped trade and defence, how the first permanent crossing changed everything, and how the embankments became the city’s most famous stage.
