Around 1900 Budapest was one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe. Walk through the banks, squares and avenues of the downtown and discover the confidence — and the contradictions — of the city's golden age.
In the decades after 1867 Budapest transformed itself almost overnight. Pest, Buda and Óbuda were united, the boulevards were laid out, and a new class of bankers, merchants and professionals built a downtown to rival Vienna.
On this walk we look closely at the buildings they left behind — their allegories and inscriptions, their ambitions and anxieties — and follow the story into the twentieth century, when the same squares became the stage for very different histories.
