The tiled gable of the former Postal Savings Bank

Around 1900 a generation of architects asked a bold question: what would a Hungarian architecture look like? Their answers are written in glazed Zsolnay tiles, folk-art ornament and roofs that seem to ripple.

We look at the famous landmarks and at the details most people walk past — doorways, stairwells and sgraffito façades — and talk about the ideas, hopes and quarrels behind the style.
